32-bit diagnostics
1. Insert the Dell Dimension Resource CD into the CD or DVD drive.
2. Restart the Computer and as soon as you see the Dell Logo Screen (The very first screen that comes up) start tapping "F12" Key.
3. You will get "Boot Device Menu".
4. Please choose "IDE CD-ROM Drive" and Press Enter.
5. The system will scan for CD drives
6. Please Choose 32-Bit Dell Diagnostic
6. Please Choose 32-Bit Dell Diagnostics from the menu.
7. Press Enter, The Dell Diagnostic Menu will appear.
8. Press the 2 key. The Dell Diagnostic software will start.
9. You will see three options on the Dell Diagnostics menu:-
Express
Extended
Custom
Symptom

Select symptom test.

Then select "Problem with fan or system seemed to be hot".
Click on it to run the test.

32- bit Diagnostics
(changing boot seq.)

First you would have to change the boot Sequence :
1) Insert the Dell Resource CD into your CD drive.             
2) Restart the system.
The Dell logo screen appears.
3) Press the F2 key on your keyboard to enter the System Setup.
4) The System Setup screen appears.
5) Press the Down Arrow key to highlight Boot  Sequence.
6) Press the Enter key to display the available boot devices.
7) The Boot Sequence menu appears.
8) Press the Up Arrow key or the Down Arrow key to highlight IDE CD-ROM Device.
9) Press the plus + key or the minus — key to move IDE CD-ROM Device to the top of the list.
10) Press the Enter key.
11) Press the Esc key to Save and Exit.
12) Press the Enter key to Save changes and exit now.
Once you have set the system to boot from the CD, you will need to restart the computer.
13) As the boot process completes, you will see the Microsoft Windows XP Startup Menu appear. Press the Enter key on your keyboard.
14) The boot process will conclude with an A:\ prompt, followed by a blinking underline (cursor).
Here you will be able to identify your CD/DVD drive letter. See below for example:

Reduce hard drive noise


Power supply fan noise

Try and insert a folded greeting card in power supply fan to stop it. Let me know if the noise stops.

System noise

1. Reboot the computer.
2. As the computer boots, right after the after the Num Lock, Caps Lock, and Scroll Lock lights flash on the keyboard, press the F12 key.
   The Boot Menu appears.
3. Highlight the Boot to Utility Partition option, and then press the Enter key.
   If the utility partition exists, the Dell 32-Bit Diagnostics will start to run.
4. Click the Symptom tree button on the Main Menu - Service Tag screen.
5. Click the + sign next to Abnormal noise coming from my system test set.
   The specific test sets to be run expand.
6. Run the specific tests one at time
7. Note during which test(s) the system makes abnormal noise.
    The test names will appear on the right side of the screen.


SVChost.exe error
Repair Steps: -

1.    Verify Windows Update and BITS Service settings:
a.     Click Start->Run, type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) in the open box and click OK.
b.    Double click the service "Automatic Updates".
c.     Click on the Log On tab, please ensure the option "Local System account" is selected and the option "Allow service to interact with desktop" is unchecked.
d.    Check if this service has been enabled on the listed Hardware Profile. If not, please click the Enable button to enable it.
e.    Click on the tab "General "; make sure the "Startup Type" is "Automatic". Then please click the button "Start" under "Service Status" to start the service.
f.       Repeat the above steps with the other service: Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
2.    Re-Register the Windows Update DLLs
      << run the Batch file “SVCHostERR.bat” – or manually perform steps in this section.
a.     Click on Start and then click Run, type: cmd and click OK.
b.    In the command window type "REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL" (without quotation marks) and press Enter.
When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in WUAPI.DLL succeeded" message, click OK.
c.     Please repeat these steps for each of the following commands:

d.    Next stop the windows update Service by typing:  “net stop WuAuServ”
3.    Rename the Windows Update folder:
d.    Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.
In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to SD_Old.
4.    Restart the Windows Update Service.
 .       Click Start, Run, net start WuAuServ.

5.    Reboot system

6.    Manually run Windows Update


Preventing system from automatic restart

To prevent the system from automatically restarting when a STOP error occurs, perform the following steps:

1. Click the Start button.
2. Click Control Panel.
    The Control Panel window appears.
3. Click Performance and Maintenance.
    The Performance and Maintenance window appears.
4. Click System.
    The System Properties window appears.
5. Click the Advanced tab.
6. Click the Settings button in the Startup and Recovery section.
    The Startup and Recovery window appears.
7. In the System failure section, click to remove the checkmark from the checkbox next to Automatically restart.
8. Click the OK button. Click the OK button again.
9. Close the Performance and Maintenance window.


Hardware changes

Once these steps are performed, please access the Device Manager once again, right click on the computer symbol and select the option" Scan for Hardware Changes".
REPAIR INSTALL
REPAIR INSTALL
1.        Reboot your computer with the Windows XP CD in the CD drive.
Press any key to boot from the CD appears on the screen.
2.        Press the <Spacebar>.
After the computer boots from the CD, the Windows XP Setup screen appears
Even though the second option reads R=Repair, do not press <R>; this option is for the Recovery Console. There is another repair option that will be available later in the process.
3.        Press <Enter>.
The Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen appears.
4.        Read the license agreement.
5.        Press <F8> to accept the terms and conditions.
The Windows XP Repair Options screen appears
6.        Press the <R> key to repair.

NOTE:
Setup examines your computer and copies files to the Windows installation folders. This process can take some time depending on the size of the hard drive and the speed of the computer. Once completed, setup initializes and restarts the computer.
Do not press any keys when the message Press any key to boot from the CD appears. Let Windows boot normally.
7.        Click Next.
Setup continues to install files, and after several minutes, the Welcome to Microsoft Windows window appears.
8.        Click Next.
The Thank You! window appears.
9.        Click Next.
The repair is complete.


Uninstall CD/DVD drivers

Right click on the option" XYZ CD/DVD DRIVE", select" Properties" and uninstall the driver under the "Driver" tab.
RPC service
To manually stop and restart the spooler service perform the following steps:
1.       Click Start, click Run, type command, and then click OK.
The command.com window appears.
2.       Type net stop spooler, and then press the <Enter> key.
3.       Type sc config spooler depend= RPCSS start= Auto, then and press the <Enter> key.
NOTE
NOTE:
The spaces between = and RPCSS and = and Auto are important. Without these spaces, the command will fail.
4.      
5.       Type net start spooler, and then press the <Enter> key.

Dell 944 printer

Communication error
1.       Run Setup of the printer web pack for Windows Vista.
2.       Click the Uninstall button to uninstall the printer driver and applications.
3.       Reboot when prompted.
4.       Unplug the USB cable between the printer and computer.
5.       Download the Dell™ Photo AIO 944 - Windows XP driver removal utility for Windows Vista from http://support.dell.com.
The utility's file name is D944PUXV_A01.EXE (R154237).
6.       Double-click the file D944PUXV_A01.EXE to run it.
A dialog box pops up indicating that the files were removed successfully, click OK.

NOTE: 
If the utility produces an error message, perform the following steps to remove the files manually.
1.                               Click the Start icon, Computer, go to the Tools menu, select Folders Options, go to the View tab and set Hidden Files and folders as Show hidden files and folders.
2.                               Delete the files as directed below:

Navigate to directory c:\windows\system32\spool\prtprocs\w32x86 and delete all files except mdippr.dll.
Navigate to directory c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3 and delete all files that named with dlcd*.*
Navigate to directory c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86 if it exists and delete the entire Dell_Photo_AIO_Print0E85 directory.

7.       Reboot the system
8.       Plug-in the USB cable between the printer and computer.
The Found New Hardware window appears.
9.       Click Cancel when the Found New Hardware window appears.
This is a good indication that the USB communication is resumed.
10.    Run Setup of the Dell Photo All-in-One printers 944 web pack R147270 A02 for Windows Vista and follow the prompts to install the printer driver and applications normally.

Uninstall nay software
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
DHCP service error
       
           Could not start the DHCP Client service on Local Computer
1.       Double-click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE subfolders appear.
2.       Double-click System.
3.       Double-click CurrentControlSet.
4.       Double-click Services, and scroll down to the Dhcp folder.
5.       Left-click Dhcp.
The Dhcp subkeys appears in the right pane.
6.       Double-click DependOnService.
The Edit Multi-String window appears.
7.       Highlight SYMTDI, and press the <Delete> key.
The value is deleted.
NOTE:
If a blank line appears at the end of the list, click the blank line and press the <Backspace> key.
8.       Click the OK button and close the Registry Editor.
9.       Restart the computer.

Software to burn CD or DVD



Check for DMA mode for optical drive

Ensure that the Optical Drive is Using DMA as the Transfer Mode in Device Manager
To do this, perform the following steps:
1. Close all currently open programs.
2. Open the Device Manager.
3. Expand the category IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
4. Right-click Secondary IDE Controller and then click Uninstall.
5. Click OK to Confirm Device Removal.
6. After the Device Manager tree refreshes, restart the system. 
     During system startup, Windows will re-detect the controller and attached devices.
7. Open the Device Manager.
8. Expand the category IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
9. Right-click Secondary IDE Controller and then click Properties.
10. When the Secondary IDE Channel Properties opens, click the Advanced Settings tab.
11. Click the drop-down list for Transfer Mode and select DMA if available and then click OK.
12. Restart the system.
      The settings will take effect after the system is restarted.


Removing Primary and Secondary IDE channels.

1. Click the plus (+) sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
2. Right-click to highlight the Primary and Secondary IDE Channels, and then left-click Uninstall in the pop-up menu.
3. Click Yes to confirm the device removal.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for both the Primary and Secondary IDE channels.


Clear UPPER and LOWER filters

1.             Click the Start button, click Run.
2.             In the Open box, type Regedit, and then click OK.
3.             Click the plus sign (+) next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

 NOTE:    When you click the plus sign (+) next to a folder, it will expand displaying the folders it contains in the left-hand pane of the Registry Editor. When a folder is highlighted, its contents will be displayed in the right-hand pane of the Registry Editor.
4.             Click the plus sign (+) next to SYSTEM.
5.             Click the plus sign (+) next to CurrentControlSet.
6.             Click the plus sign (+) next to Control.
7.             Click the plus sign (+) next to Class.
8.             Click(highlight)  {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
9.             On the right side of the window, click UpperFilters.
10.           Click Edit on the menu bar.
11.           Click Delete, and then click OK.
12.           On the right side of the window, click LowerFilters.
13.           Click Edit on the menu bar.
14.           Click Delete, and then click OK.
15.           Click File, and then click Exit.

If there are any values listed as upperfilters.bak or lowerfilters.bak, delete them.

Set to DMA mode

1. Click the Start button, right-click My Computer, and click Manage.
    The Computer Management window appears.
2. Click Device Manager.
3. Click the (+) plus IDE controllers section.
4. Double-click the appropriate IDE channel.
    The IDE Channel Properties window appears.
5. Under the Advanced Settings tab, verify that the transfer mode is set to DMA if available.
6. Click the OK button to save the change. At this point, you may need to restart for the change to become active.


Disable Sonic DLA

To disable Sonic DLA on the system, perform the following steps:
1. Click the Start button, and then click My Computer.
    The My Computer window opens.
2. Right-click the optical drive, and then left-click Properties.
    The optical drive Properties window opens.
3. Click the DLA tab at the top of the window.
4. Uncheck the option for Enable DLA on your drives
5. Click OK to return to the My Computer window.


Browse media in windows

Attempt to browse the media in Microsoft® Windows®.
1. Hold the Windows key down and press the E key.
2. Right-click the CD or DVD drive, and then click Explore in the pop-up menu.
3. Determine if the contents of the disk are displayed. 


Add PCI video card

1. Click Start- Control Panel- System
2. Click the Hardware tab and the Device Manager button
3. Open Display Adapters.
4. Double-click the Intel listing
5. Under Device Usage, change this to "Do not use this device (disable)"
6. Click OK- Apply and/or OK
7. Close all boxes
8. Click Start- Shutdown- Restart- OK or Click Start- Turn Off Computer- Restart
9. Press F2 at the blue Dell logo screen
10. Down arrow to (Integrated Devices) Primary Video and change this to PCI or AUTO (whatever is listed)
11. Press ESC several times to Exit and Save your changes
12. Power the system off

13. Open the case cover and add the PCI video card
14. Connect the monitor to the added PCI video card
15. Power on your computer
16. Let the computer boot up and load the drivers off of the CD provided with the card



Chkdsk for diff. systems



1. Please restart the system and when you see the Dell Logo screen kindly start tapping on the F12 key.
2. This would take us to "Boot Menu".
3. Insert the Windows XP CD in the system.
4. Please select "IDE CD ROM" and hit enter.
5. Hit any key to boot from the CD, when the message appears.
6. You will reach blue colored Windows Setup Screen, which reads Setup is loading file on the bottom.
7. On the next menu "Welcome to Setup", select the second option "Press R to repair windows using recovery console".
8. Next screen hit 1 and hit enter.
9. Enter your administrator password if you have one or hit enter.
10. The command prompt will appear.
11. Kindly type "chkdsk /r" and hit enter to start the process which may take around 45 minutes to complete.
12. When you are back on C prompt type in "EXIT" and hit enter the system will boot to normal mode.

Creating RAID1

To create a RAID 1 (Mirror) Volume, perform the following steps:
1. Reboot the system.
    The Intel RAID configuration status screen appears.
2. Press the CTRL and “I” keys at the same time.
    The Intel Serial ATA RAID main menu appears.
3. Using the arrow keys, choose option 1 to create a RAID volume. 
    The Create Array menu appears.
4. Press the ENTER key until RAID Level is highlighted.
5. Using the up and down arrow keys, change the RAID Level to RAID1(Mirror)
6. Press the ENTER key until Create Volume is highlighted.
7. Press the Y key to create the array. 
    The Main Menu appears.
8. Press the ESC key to exit the RAID Configuration Utility.
    A confirmation screen appears.
9. Press the Y key to confirm exit.
    The RAID Configuration Utility closes.
10. Reboot the system.


Creating RAID0

To create a RAID 0 (Stripe) Volume, perform the following steps:
1. Reboot the system.
    The Intel RAID Configuration Status screen appears.
2. Press the CTRL and “I” keys at the same time.
    The Intel Serial ATA RAID main menu appears.
3. Using the arrow keys, choose option 1 to create a RAID volume. 
    The Create Array menu appears.
4. Press the ENTER key until Create Volume is highlighted.
5. Press the Y key to create the array. 
    The Main Menu appears.
6. Press the ESC key to exit the RAID Configuration Utility.
    A confirmation screen appears.
7. Press the Y key to confirm exit.

8.  Reboot the system.


Drivers check for Audio

Please follow the following steps and let me know if you see any Red or Yellow marks on the option "Audio, Video & Game Controllers" by clicking on the + sign next to it:
1) Right click on the “My Computer” icon on the desktop.
2) Go to properties.
3) Go to hardware.
4) Select Device Manager.


Disk clean-up

1) Click on Start.
2) Programs
3) Accessories
4) System tools
5) Disk Clean-up and Disk Defragmenter.


Flea power

1) Shut the system down completely.
2) Disconnect all cables from the tower
3) Press and hold the power button for 10-15 seconds
4) Connect the cables back and restart the system.


90/90 H.D.D

The Dell BIOS splash screen, press the Ctrl + Alt + D keys at the same time.
The computer beeps once to acknowledge that the hard drive diagnostics have been initiated and the following message appears:

2.The test may take up to three minutes to run the diagnostics (the time is dependent upon size and speed of drive).

H.D.D drive creation

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).   
2. Locate and then click the following key in the registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Atapi\Parameters
3. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value: 
      Value name: EnableBigLba
      Data type: REG_DWORD
      Value data: 0x1
4. Quit Registry Editor.
5. After rebooting, run Disk Management (Start-run-compmgmt.msc), delete the second partition that was created during setup, and create a new second partition with the rest of the drive.


Installing drivers and utilities CD


To install the Drivers and Utilities CD, perform the following steps:
1. Insert the Drivers and Utilities CD in the CD or DVD drive.
The Resource CD Installation window appears.
2. Click the OK button.
The Welcome to the InstallShield Wizard window appears.
3. Click the Next button.
The InstallShield Wizard Complete window appears.
4. Click the finish button.

Burning CD using Windows
To burn CD using Windows XP CD Burning Utility -

1. Insert a blank, writable CD into the CD recorder.


2. Open My Computer.

3. Click the files or folders you want to copy to the CD. To select more than one file, hold down the CTRL key while you click the files you want. Then, under File and Folder Tasks (left side bar), click Copy this file, Copy this folder, or Copy the selected items.

4. If the files are located in My Pictures, under Picture Tasks, click Copy to CD or Copy all items to CD, and then skip to step 5.

5. In the Copy Items dialog box (this will pop up by itself once you click on "Copy…") , click the CD recording drive, and then click Copy.


6. In My Computer, double-click the CD recording drive. Windows displays a temporary area where the files are held before they are copied to the CD. Verify that the files and folders that you intend to copy to the CD appear under Files Ready to be Written to the CD.

7. Under CD Writing Tasks, click Write these files to CD. Windows displays the CD Writing Wizard. Follow the instructions in the wizard. (Click - Next - Finish)


IPCONFIG

1. Click Start and select Run.
    The Run window appears.
2. In the Run window, type Command and click OK.
    The Command Window appears.
3. Type ipconfig /renew, ipconfig/release and ipconfig/dns flush and press the Enter key.
4. Note the settings for the failling adapter.


McAfee Uninstall

To uninstall Mcafee follow the below given steps:
1. Click on the Start button.
2. Highlight Settings then click on Control Panel. The Control Panel will then appear.
3. Double click on the Add/Remove Programs icon. The Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box will then appear.
4. Locate McAfee VirusScan on the list of installed programs and single click on it so it is highlighted.
5. Click the Add/Remove button.
Note: If at any time you are prompted to remove shared files, answer Yes To All.


To enable the MIC Boost setting

To enable the MIC Boost setting, perform the following steps:
1. Click the Start button, point to Programs (or All Programs), point to Accessories, point to Multimedia (or Entertainment), and then click  Volume Control.
    The Volume Control window appears.
2. Click Options, then click Properties.
3. Under Adjust Volume for select Recording.
4. Click to check microphone and then click OK.
5. Click to select the microphone as the selected recording device, then click the Advanced button under the Microphone volume control.
   The Advanced Controls for Microphone window appears.
6. Under Other Controls, add a check to the box for MIC Boost (or +20 db Gain).


Microphone

To test the microphone using Windows® Sound Recorder, perform the following steps:
1. Click the Start button, point to Programs (or All Programs), point to Accessories, point to Multimedia (or Entertainment), then click Sound Recorder.
2. Click the Record button, and speak into the microphone.
The green waveform reacts to your voice.
3. To end the recording, click Stop.
4. To hear your recording, click the Play button and verify the volume level.


Microphone audio properties

To adjust the microphone audio properties, perform the following steps:
1. Click the Start button, point to Programs (or All Programs), point to Accessories, point to Multimedia (or Entertainment), and then click Volume Control.
The Volume Control window appears.
2. Click Options, then click Properties.
3. Under Adjust Volume for, select Recording.
4. Ensure the microphone is checked, then click OK.
The Audio Properties window closes and the Recording Control window appears.
5. Ensure the microphone is the selected recording device.
 NOTE:    If the volume level of the microphone is below 75%, raise the volume level to roughly 85%.
6. Close the Recording Control window.


Windows volume control

To adjust the Windows volume control, perform the following steps:
1.             Click the Start button, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to Entertainment, and then click Volume Control.
2.             If there are any checkmarks in the boxes next to Mute, click to deselect the box.
3.             Increase all volumes to at least 75% on their respective bars if not already set to that level.  You can increase the volume by dragging the level indicators up their respective slide bars.
4.             Click Options, then click Properties.
5.             Click to select all of the boxes listed under Show the following volume controls, and click the OK button.
6.             Confirm again that nothing is muted and adjust the volume controls until they are at least 75% up their respective bars.


Monitor self test

1. Turn off the monitor.
2. Unplug the video cable from the back of the computer. To ensure proper Self-Test operation, remove the Analog (blue connector) cables from the back of computer.
3. Turn on the monitor. The floating 'Dell™ - Self-Test Feature Check' dialog box should appear on-screen (against a black background) if the monitor cannot sense a video signal and is working correctly. While in self-test mode, the power LED remains green. Also, depending upon the selected input, one of the dialogs shown below will continuously scroll through the screen.
4. This box also appears during normal system operation if the video cable becomes disconnected or damaged.
5. Turn off your monitor and reconnect the video cable; then turn the monitor.

Monitor dispatch:-
May I have the monitor serial #.Dell Monitors have a 12 or 20 digit serial number. This number is located on the lower right side or back of the monitor.

I suggest you to please send us back the failed monitor in the same box in which you receive the replacement monitor and call the courier company # mentioned on the sticker available inside the box and they will pick the box.

MSConfig

(VCI to be done)

Ist step:  
We need to disable certain startup items that get loaded when computer boots to the desktop and consume system resources which make the system slow. I will provide you with the exact steps on how to do it.

2nd step:

1.Please click on the START button and click on RUN
2. This will open a box which will have a space to type a command. Please type MSCONFIG in the text space and press OK .
3. This will open a window which will say "System Configuration Utility".
4. You will see various tabs on the top. The last tab will say STARTUP. Please click on it.
5. Now the window will display all the programs which start when the computer boots to the operating system. (which have a check mark next to them)
6. So, we can uncheck which are not required, hence saving the computers resources for the useful work.

3rd step:

Please make sure that you do not uncheck any of the following as these are critical for the system to boot to the operating system.
ScanRegistry
TaskMonitor
SystemTray
LoadPowerProfile
RunDll
VPtray
Ctfmon
Antivirus software entries

After this is done, click on Apply and then OK. This will ask you for a system restart. Please restart the system for the changes to take effect. 


No POST

The issue you are facing with the computer could be caused by any of the following situations:
• Defective power supply
• Loss of AC power or PC not plugged in
• Defective system board

Clear NVRAM

1) Start the system and keep tapping F2 key
2) When BIOS page is displayed
3) Push Caps, Scroll & Num lock to turn on
4) Press ALT+E and ALT+F
 System will beep
5) Press ESC and select save changes to exit.

Restore the BIOS (System Setup) defaults
1. Power up the PC, or if the PC is already turned on, shut it down and then power up the system.
2. Press <F2> key in the first few seconds while the initial Dell logo is on the screen to enter the BIOS.
3. Press <Alt> + <F> key.  This will restore the system defaults. 
4. Press <Esc> key to exit the BIOS.


Built in self test using RCD

1. Insert your Dell Dimension Resource CD into the CD or DVD drive, configure the system to boot to the CD drive, and then boot to the Dimension Resource CD.
2. When the Boot Menu appears, press the Down Arrow key until Dell Diagnostics is highlighted, and then press the Enter key.
3. Press the Down Arrow key until 32-bit diagnostics is highlighted, and then press the Enter key.
The Dell Diagnostics menu appears.
4. Skip to the section "Running the Diagnostic" below.
5. At the Diagnostics menu, click the Custom Test button.
6. From the list of devices, click the (+) plus sign next to CDROM/DVD.
7. From the list of drives, click the (+) plus sign next to the drive which you wish to test.
8. Click the checkbox next to Built In Self Test.

Built in self test

1) Reboot the system.
2) Press the F12 key on the keyboard when the Dell logo appears.
3) Choose Boot to Utility Partition from the diagnostic menu.
4) Skip to the section " Running the Diagnostic" below.
5) At the Diagnostics menu, click the Custom Test button.
6) From the list of devices, click the (+) plus sign next to CDROM/DVD.
7) From the list of drives, click the (+) plus sign next to the drive which you wish to test.
8) Click the checkbox next to Built In Self Test


OS-Reinstall



Repair vista:-




1. We need to turn the system off completely.
2.Turn the system on and start tapping the F12 key when we see the blue dell logo.
3.We need to get the screen ATAPI cdrom or IDE cdrom.
4. We need to insert the operating system reinstallation cd microsoft windows xp in the top cdrom drive.
5. Choose IDE cdrom/Atapi cdrom and push enter.
6.You will get a new screen that tells press any key to boot from cd.
7.Hit the space bar immediately.
8.You will get a blue screen windows set up.
9.Let this continue.Finally you will get a screen Welcome to setup.
10. Just push enter in that screen.
11. You will see the license agreement.Press F8, I Agree.
12. Once you agree to the license agreement, the next screen would be the installation screen .
13. The next screen would be , to install a fresh copy of windows hit C
14. Select the partition which says C: WINDOWS or NTFS. and hit enter .
15, The next is the format process . Here you have to select
FORMAT THE PARTITON USING NTFS FILE SYSTEM.
16.Now setup would format and the format would wipe out the entire hard drive.
17. After this the windows xp installation starts.\

19. The installation completes in approximately 39 minutes
Chkdsk /r
Insert the Windows XP CD into the CD drive.
Shut down the system. Press the power button to restart your system.
Press the F12 key when the Dell BIOS splash screen appears.
A boot menu appears. Use the arrow keys to select CD-ROM Drive from the list.
The prompt Press any key to boot from CD... appears. Press the spacebar.
The Welcome to Setup dialog box appears. Press the R key to load the Recovery Console.
Type the administrator password (or press the Enter key if no administrator password exists).
 In the Recovery Console, type CHKDSK /R and press the Enter key.
The prompt Are you sure? appears.
Press the Y key, then press the Enter key
Run the Fixboot command in the Microsoft® Windows® XP operating system.
1.        Type Fixboot X: and press the Enter key, where X is the drive letter of the partition you are logged into.
The prompt Are you sure? appears.
2.        Press Y and then press the Enter key.
3.        Type EXIT and press the Enter key.


Importing in MS-outlook

The Steps to follow are :
1. Open Outlook
2. On the File menu, point to Import, and then click Messages.
3. In the Select an e-mail program to import from box, click Microsoft Outlook Express 5 or Microsoft Outlook Express 6, and then click Next.
4. Click Import mail from an OE5 store directory or Import mail from an OE6 store directory, and then click OK.
5. Click Browse, and then click on the Mail Backup folder on your desktop.
6. Click OK, and then click Next.
7. Click All folders, click Next, and then click Finish.


PC restore

Please back up your data and Remove all the external peripherals connected to the system before performing these steps:
1. Power the computer on.
2. When the Dell screen appears press and hold the Ctrl key on the keyboard, press the F11 key, then release them both at the same time.
   The Dell PC Restore by Symantec window appears.
NOTE:     Press the keys one time only. If you press them more than once, a keyboard error occurs and the process has to be initiated again.

3. Click the Restore button or press the Tab key to highlight Restore and press the Enter key.
A caution message appears advising that all data will be lost.

4. Click the Confirm button or press the Tab key to highlight Confirm and press the Enter key.
The Progress window appears. Once the process is begun, Dell PC Restore usually takes only 8 to 10 minutes to complete.
When the restore is complete, the message The system recovery process was successful appears.

5. Click the Finish button or press the Tab key to highlight Finish and press the Enter key.
The computer will restart.
Your software is now as it was when you first received your computer.


Print spool error
1st step:

1. Open the Services Management Console (click Start, Run and enter services.msc).
2. Double-click the Print Spooler service to open its Properties window.
3. On the General tab, check that Startup type is Automatic.

2nd step:
We will try to remove all Print Spooler service dependencies other than the Remote Procedure Call service. To do this, we need follow the below given steps:
Click Start, Run and enter sc config spooler depend= RPCSS (there must be a space after "=" but not before it.)

3rd step:
By removing the other dependencies the Print Spooler service should be able to run, but the printer functionality may be affected, and it may be necessary to reinstall the printer drivers.


Safe mode
1. Restart the computer.
2. Tap the F8 key on the keyboard during the boot process until you see the  Windows Advanced Options Menu on the screen.
 NOTE:    If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, restart the system and try again.
3. Select Safe Mode with Networking from the menu using the arrow keys on the keyboard and then press the Enter key.
4. Select Administrator at the log in screen.
      A Warning dialog box with the message Windows is running in safe mode. appears.
5. Click the Yes button.
    The desktop appears with the words Safe Mode appearing in all four corners.


Sfc scan

(Cust name), the main reason for using this utility is when you suspect there may be a problem with a Windows XP system file. This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and make sure of their correctness, replacing any files that it finds with a problem. The steps to run it are as follows. Before I provide you the steps for system file checker I would like to inform you that the system file checker may prompt for inserting Windows XP OS CD. Please make sure that you have the OS CD handy.

1. From the Start menu, select Run.
2. In the Open field, type sfc /scannow (Note: There is a space between sfc and /scannow)
3. Select the OK button.
4. Follow the prompts throughout the System File Checker process.
5. Reboot the computer when System File Checker completes.


Sonic update manager

To correct the problem, click the link below and perform the following steps.
1. Click the following link to access the hotfix from the Roxio website:


The File Download - Security Warning window appears.
2. Click Run
The Internet Explorer - Security Warning window appears.
3. Click Run.
The Sonic - ISUM Hotfix Setup window appears.
4. Click Yes.

5. Click Yes when the reboot prompt appears.


Load sound blaster defaults

System Restore

I would like to inform you that you will loose driver files, application files, which you have stored on the system since the date on which you will restore the system to.

We can try doing system restore, so that we can get back to the point where the system was working fine and this issue had not evolved. It will not delete any files you might have saved on your computer. And the best part is that we can always undo this restoration if needed.

The steps to perform system restore are as follows:

1. Click on Start-- All programs--Accessories--System Tools--System Restore.
2. You will see a 'System Restore' window popping up.
3. Click on next
4. Choose a Highlighted Bold date in the calendar, prior to the one on which the problem started.
5. Click next – Click next once more.
6. The computer will show a progressive bar and then restart automatically.
7. The step will restore the computer to the earlier date when it was working fine.
8. Click on OK after getting back to the desktop.

Uninstall google taskbar

Step 1: Uninstall Google Toolbar and Google Desktop from add/remove programs.
Step 2: Msconfig >> Startup >>Uncheck gtb.exe / gtb2.exe.
Step 3: Apply Ok/Close.

Change the Paging File Size
NOTE:     You must be logged on to the system as an administrator to change the paging file size.
1.             Click the Start button.
2.             Right-click My Computer.
3.             Left-click Properties.
The System Properties window appears.
4.             Click the Advanced tab.
5.             Click the Settings button located under the Performance section of the window.
The Performance Options window appears.
6.             Click the Advanced tab.
7.             Click the Change button under the Virtual Memory section of the window.
The Virtual Memory window appears.
8.             Click to select the Custom Size option.
10.           Type in your desired Initial Size (MB) setting.
11.           Increase the Maximum Size (MB) setting.
12.           Click the Set button.
13.           Click the OK button on the Virtual Memory window.
14.           Click the OK button on the Performance Options window.
15.           Click the OK button on the System Properties window.
16.           Restart your computer.
Your updated paging file size settings are saved.

MaCfee registration
Missing a valid Dell Service Tag" when using/registering MacAfee:

Perform the steps mentioned below to resolve the issue.

1. Click on 'Start' button.

2. Highlight on 'Search' or 'Find'.

3. Click on 'Files or folders'.

4. In the Named field, type MCDELTAG.EXE

5. In the Look In field, type C:

6. Click on 'Search' or 'Find'

7. Once the file is found, double-click on the file to run it.

NOTE: It may look like it didn't run since your screen will not change but just continue with the next step.

8. Search for another file, again click on 'Start' button.

9. Highlight on 'Search' or 'Find'.

10. Click on 'Files or folders'.

11. In the Named field, type MCREGWIZ.EXE and click on 'Search'.

12. In the Look In field, type C:

13. Click on 'Search' or 'Find'

14. Once the file is found, double-click on the file to run it.

15. The Product Setup will pop-up on the screen.

16. Continue with the Product Setup then click on 'Submit' once you have entered all the information needed.


Formatting the hard drive and reinstalling operating system
1. Could you insert the windows reinstallation cd in the top drive.
2. After inserting the CD you need to restart the system and then press F12 when you see Dell blue logo screen.
3. Now highlight the option that says "IDE CD ROM DEVICE" and hit enter.
4. Now you will get a message that says "press any key to continue". Hit enter.
5. Then you will get a message that says "welcome to set up". Then hit enter to set up windows xp.
6. Now press F8 for licensing agreement.
7. Now press ESC to continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing.
8. Now you will see an option in a rectangle box that says "C: Partition 2 {NTFS} 38107 MB <25237 MB Free> or Unpartitioned space 8 MB".
9. Highlight the one that says C: and hit "D" to delete the partition.
10. Now there will a message on the screen that says "To delete this partition", Press Enter. Setup will prompt you for confirmation before deleting the partition or To go back to the previous screen without deleting the partition, press ESC".
11. Press D to delete the partition.
12. There will be a new screen that says "You asked Setup to delete the partition C: Partition 2 {NTSC}, to delete this partition, press L Caution all data on this partition will be lost or To return to the previous screen without deleting the partition, press ESC.
13. Now press "L".
14. Now check the screen that says "To set up windows XP on the selected item, press Enter" or to Create a partition in the unpartitioned space press C, or to delete the selected partition, press D.
15. Highlight the unpartitioned space and press "C" to create a new partition.
16. The new screen will say "A new partition for Windows XP has been created on 38147 MB disk 0 at ID 0 on bus 0 on atapi {MBR} ".
17. Now you will get the following options.
18. Format the partition using the NTFS file system(Quick)
19. Format the partition using the FAT file system?(Quick)
20. Format the partition using the NIFS file system?
21. Format the partition using the NIFS file system?
22. Convert the partition to NTFS.
23. Leave the current File system intact.(No changes)
24. Now Format the partition using the NTFS file system(Quick).
25. Now the new screen will say set up is formatting and set up is copying files now.
26. It will now take 3-4 minutes to copy all the files, after that it will restart the computer, please do not press any key while the system is restarting, just sit back and relax.
27. After the system restarts the actual installation of windows Xp will happen, which generally takes almost 45 minutes, during the installation you will be asked to select country, name and time zone, etc, make sure you select the relevant entries.
28. Once the 45 minutes process is complete , it will restart the system one more time, make sure not to press any key again, the system will do every thing by itself and then will take you to the windows xp desktop.
29. Now you will get a screen that says "An exciting New Look". Installing Windows in red. Setup will complete in approx 34 minutes".
30. After installation you will get "welcome screen for the first time". Then tell the customer to wait till the system reaches the desktop.
31. Then tell the customer to restart the system.
