Alternate DNS server usage

For internet issues where we are able to browse a web site by IP address but not the URL even after flushing the DNS resolver cache, we can try using alternate DNS servers provided by openDNS.com. Follow the steps provided below.

·         Select Control Panel from the Start menu.
·         Click Network Connections.
·         Right click on Local Area Connection in the Network Connections window.
·         Click Properties button.
·         Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties.
·         Click the radio button Use the following DNS server addresses and type in the following DNS addresses:
o   Primary DNS: 208.67.222.222
o   Alternate DNS: 208.67.220.220
·         Click OK and then Close.
·         Restart the machine and check if the issue is resolved. If it is, it’s an ISP issue, else it’s an OS issue.

After performing these steps, make sure you flush and register the DNS cache.

·         Launch Command Prompt in Admin Mode
·         Type ipconfig /flushdns
·         Type ipconfig /registerdns
