Windows 7 : Upgrade Paths

Just one clarification here. From what I’ve read about the Windows 7 SKUs which will be sold in the US, only Windows 7 Home Premium, Pro and Ultimate will be sold, with Home Basic being set for release only in emerging markets. I suppose we can remove Windows 7 Home Basic from this list. The same could be said for Enterprise as that would not be sold to consumers at all, only to corporate and Volume License customers

Also, the list is missing Windows 7 Starter. Starter is primed to be sold with Netbooks, pre-installed by OEMs. It doesn’t have to be included in the list as we don’t support Netbooks here

In my opinion, the Windows 7 Upgrade Paths should be as below

Why are all my files hidden? Malware/virus

There is a new cool virus/malware out there folks.  I’m sure you’ve already heard of it, but I wanted to take a moment and give you some more information about it and provide a good solution for resolving it.

The Malware/Virus hides all the files on your computer and it’s accompanied by the lovely fake repair utility pictured below.  Customer may call in saying all the icons on their desktop have disappeared or that their Start Menu is now blank.  If you go to the C: drive you will not see any listed files.  If you click on the link below it will take you to the Bleeping Computer website.  The site has a great description of the various “errors” that you will see as well as a complete listing of the solution steps.

Please keep in mind that Malware/Virus infections is not fully supported by us.  While it’s okay to refer a customer to this site and maybe get them started on the fix; this is something that they can and should be undertaking on their own.  Our official support policy is to OSRI systems infected with Viruses/Malware.  There is also the option of sending them to the fee based RAS team, however someone good at following step by step instructions should be able to easily follow the steps laid out on the linked site.

How does the depot box looks like ?

Please note.
1.       Also see the kind of foam packing which insures that there is no damage during transit.
2.       It contains tech note sheet where customer can mention the issue while sending the system to depot.
3.       Request you all to ensure you all are asking customers to make a note of waybill number before shipping the system to depot. This helps us track systems faster and reduce systems lost in transit or other cases, that have come to our notice recently.

Getting to the System recovery options if F8 is not working

System keeps going to the Windows Error Recovery screen and ‘Start Windows Normally’ option fails to load windows. Even the Advanced Boot Options are inaccessible through F8.

In this case, run PSA to make sure that the hardware is fine. If PSA pass, try the following steps:

1.       Initiate the Startup repair using the ‘Launch Startup Repair (recommended)’ option.

1.       Startup repair will try to repair the problem and if its unable to do so, following message will appear:

1.       Select ‘Don’t send’ and on the next screen select ‘View advanced options for system recovery and support’. Don’t click on Finish or Cancel.

1.       Select the Keyboard input method on the next screen and hit Next. That will take you to the System Recovery Options.

1.       You can now try System restore/Factoy image restore.

Office 2010 Setup Err- 'There was a problem setting up MS Office Starter 2010'

Please try the below provided workaround and update if the issue is getting fixed.

Workaround :

The issue is caused by incorrect value introduced into the registry at the following location:
[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders]
"AppData"

This “AppData” location should be “%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming. However on the machine where this bug repro’s this value is set to: “%APPDATA%”.
This creates a sort of infinite loop and end result is CSIDL_APPDATA, and %APPDATA% are no longer defined for system account and App-V connect fails.

Here is also a KB article which addresses similar issue for current user.

Details Of DSL Emergency Backup/Restore Option...

The option of “Emergency Backup/Restore” of DSL works regardless of whether customer is running Basic or Premium version.

And, The “Emergency File & Folder” backup during restore is meant to save the customer’s Data that is not included in the factory. This is meant to only save their Pictures, music, documents, etc… not OS settings.

If the customer has already performed the backup and the backup file has been successfully created, they can run the backup file as a standalone application.

All they would need to do is run the file as administrator and they would see the options to restore the files.

Once, the restoration is completed, there will be a “Emergency Backup” folder created on the Desktop.

To restore the files and folders, customers just need to right click on the backup and run it administrator. This will restore the files and folders to the respective location of where it was.

Only time it might not work is if customer has changed the USERNAME or tries to restore files/folders from a different USERACCOUNT.

NOTE:

Once the “Backup” activity is completed, all the options under “Restore” tab will be highlighted.
